Too small for me May 30, 2009
By I. Peters Who doesn't love the Stella? I have admired this bag for a long time, ever since I had found it in black pebbled leather in a catalog where it was advertised as a travel bag (Note: Ellington has long since quit making this particular Stella model).
The big BUT, however, is: The regular Stella as sold here is a lot smaller than the one I had bought way back when. The design has also slightly changed. The smaller size (12 x 11.5 vs. my old 15 x 13) though renders this otherwise super-practical bag almost useless for me. I tried to put my usual stuff in (which admittedly is quite a bit), and while it still barely fit in, the bag simply did not look good anymore and was uncomfortable to carry, especially on my back.
Another point is that this model closes only with a magnetic closure. While it looks quite secure when not overstuffed, I would be highly uncomfortable carrying this on my back anywhere where there are lots of people such as in big cities. It is simply not secure enough for me.
If I could talk to Ellington, I would implore them to offer a larger Stella leather version with zipper closure. I'd be the first one to get it, especially if it were offered in cute colors.
As it stands, the only Stella model that fits this bill is the nylon travel version of the Ellington Stella Tote. But I want one in smooth, colorful leather. Ellington - are you listening?! :-)

very versatile May 04, 2010
By Tennis Agent I have a toddler and constantly need my hands free, as well as the ability to bend down and NOT whack my kid with my purse. However, I don't always want to look like a fashion fool. There's a reason you can't find backpack purses... they aren't in style. I need one anyway, and this bag is awesome. It changes based on how you pick up the straps. I found it especially useful on a recent trip to Boston. We were on a VERY crowded, standing room only train, and I was happy to hold it as a regular purse with the only access hidden under my arm. If I had had a straight up backpack purse in this situation, someone may have taken my wallet without my knowledge. Then, 5 minutes later as we were wandering the streets, I changed it to a backpack and never had to be annoyed with straps falling off or hitting anyone with my purse as we passed by. The leather is pretty soft and it's comfortable to carry either way. I usually don't do brown leather, only black, but the trim is very dark and goes with both.
You can't cram it too full of stuff, but I regularly keep a trifold wallet, my camera, my checkbook, and several other womanly things and the bag lays fine as a purse or backpack. You can't stuff a sweater or large glasses case into it and have it look/feel right, but I like to have limits or I will constantly be tempted to carry the kitchen sink. From a style standpoint the purse and the backpack "looks" are not my first choice, but I may still order this thing in several colors (I currently own the red) because you cannot beat the function. If you are feeling guilty about the current fashion faux pas of needing a backpack purse, BUY THIS BAG!!! If you often leave your purse in the car because you don't want to carry it (yet you worry about theft) BUY THIS BAG!
