Extremely well made, tough and rugged!! Dec 12, 2010

I have had this product for about 3 months now and have already taken it on 3 overseas trips - one to Europe and 2 to the Middle East. It is a bit heavy and not having any wheels, you'll need a folding wheeled cart (I bought one from Target for $40 - where the wheels flatten out when folded) to lug it around the airport. It does not have any zippers, so the downside is when you are going through security, and if they want to check your bag (traveling in the Middle East almost ensures they want to hand-check your luggage), you'll need to prepare beforehand. What I do is to just use the center strap to hold it together until I am past security and then I use the 3 front fasteners. The ones on the side, I rarely use as I just stuff odds and ends into the side pockets. The first time I used it, I stuffed clothes into the main compartment - this helped bulge it out and since then it has retained it's shape - you can fit quite a lot into it - just watch the weight. Getting it into the overhead compartment is quite easy - it fits into almost any aircraft (except the tiny ones and then no suitcase fits in those planes). I really wish Dave would re-consider and put wheels on this line of luggage (and the vintage suitcases - that is the only reason that is keeping me from buying one of them). I've received many compliments on this piece of luggage (even from the security folks). After buying this one, I bought a messenger bag from Saddleback and have been very happy with that one as well. The luggage is now beginning to show signs of travel (good - you don't want it to look brand new) and the leather has become more pliable. According to Dave's instructions (he is the owner), I don't need to apply any leather conditioner for at least 6 months. I have other leather luggage and for nearly all of them, I apply leather conditioner once a year. You will be very happy with this piece - just remember, it is not soft supple leather that you get. Instead it is very tough, rugged and looks like it will be extremely durable - it seems to get better with each trip that I take and the piece just begs to be treated like luggage.

Great for weekend trips Mar 16, 2011

I travel a lot with my job. Most of our trips are 2-3 day trips. This bag holds enough clothes for 3 days. I've had mine for over two years and I use it all the time. It has held up well and is getting more beautiful after every trip. All the straps can make it cumbersome to get in and out of. All the straps have to be undone to be able to get into the bag. I also wish the end pockets were a bit bigger.

This is my second Saddleback product. It is an exceptionally well made product. It would be a bit more useful if it was a little larger.

Amazing Quality Classic Yet Modern Bag! Dec 09, 2011
By Devon I'd been drooling over this Saddleback Leather bag for a while before I finally pulled the trigger on it. I'm very glad I did! It's beautifully made, with very high quality leather. It feels and smells like the sort of bag Phileas Fogg would have taken on his trip: practical, durable, quality. In carbon black it's also pleasantly modern with it's clean lines and simple design. It holds more than I expected, it's solid yet not overly heavy, and has been a great travel bag. I'm looking forward to breaking it in over the next 50,000 miles I travel.

I'm a believer! Aug 01, 2011
By U. Obiora Before buying this bag, I spent months reading reviews, watching YouTube clips, and basically looking up information on alternative bags. In the end, I decided that it would be a worthy birthday present and since I had a few trips coming up, decided to go ahead and order.
The bag is absolutely gorgeous. The leather is a beautiful, tough, boot leather that is a pleasure to touch, smell, and hold. It is a rather heavy bag, not to mention stiff but I did sort of know all that going in. The buckles are lovely and there is a certain satisfaction to be derived in actually having to buckle each strap down as opposed to simply zipping everything up that is hard to explain. It kinda feels a bit... frontier-like. The handle is comfortable to hold and the carrying straps are also comfortable to wear although it takes some fiddling to find a comfortable carrying position while traveling. I find it is a lot more comfortable for me to carry it by the handle than to use the strap and am contemplating picking up a second one just to balance me out while traveling.
Now, this bag is truly a weekend bag only. It was smaller and larger than I expected and I do realize that those statements contradict each other but it is the best way to describe how I felt upon receiving it. It is smaller than my two duffles that I normally travel with. However, because it was smaller, I approached packing it with a discipline I tended not to apply to the larger duffles I own and after packing the absolute necessities in it, I found that there was still space for more. Given the tough straps and buckles, I've discovered that you can overpack this bag and easily get it to shut by manipulating the straps. I do recommend tucking the ends of the straps back into the holder and if you are checking the bag, removing the carrying strap. I'll wear the carrying strap like a bandolier when the bag is checked.
All in all, this bag is certainly as tough and good-looking as advertised. And it certainly does draw attention too which can be good or bad depending on your point of view.
